Đây là dự án trọng điểm quốc gia nằm trong quy hoạch phát triển mạng lưới đường bộ cao tốc Việt Nam đến năm 2020 và tầm nhìn sau năm 2020; Quy hoạch chi tiết đường bộ cao tốc Bắc-Nam phía đông đã được Thủ tướng Chính phủ phê duyệt. Trong đó tuyến cao tốc Trung Lương-Mỹ Thuận-Cần Thơ được đầu tư và dự kiến hoàn thành vào năm 2020.
Ông Dương Quang Châu, Chủ tịch HĐQT Công ty CP BOT Trung Lương-Mỹ Thuận cho biết đây là dự án đường cao tốc có quy mô lớn được thực hiện theo hình thức BOT đầu tiên ở khu vực phía nam. Dự án có tổng vốn đầu tư 9.600 tỷ đồng, trong đó vốn tự có của nhà đầu tư chiếm tới 30% là 2.800 tỷ đồng.
Dự án đang được khẩn trương triển khai đồng loạt trên toàn tuyến, quyết tâm hoàn thành dự án vào năm 2020. Hiện dự án đã giải ngân hơn 1.700 tỷ đồng bằng nguồn vốn của nhà đầu tư, trong đó chi trả cho giải phóng mặt bằng là hơn 1.300 tỷ đồng, thanh toán khối lượng xây lắp, tư vấn và các chi phí khác là gần 460 tỷ đồng.
Đoạn cao tốc Trung Lương-Mỹ Thuận dài 51 km, đi qua 5 huyện của tỉnh Tiền Giang gồm Châu Thành, Tân Phước, Cai Lậy, Cái Bè và Thị xã Cai Lậy. Điểm đầu dự án tại nút giao Thân Cửu Nghĩa (tiếp nối cao tốc TPHCM-Trung Lương). Điểm cuối tại nút giao với QL30.
Toàn tuyến cao tốc Trung Lương-Mỹ Thuận-Cần Thơ phấn đầu hoàn thành năm 2020, được kỳ vọng sẽ rút ngắn thời gian lưu thông từ TPHCM đến các tỉnh Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long, góp phần thúc đẩy phát triển kinh tế xã hội của khu vực Tây Nam bộ, giảm tải cho QL1.
